Laughter Yoga & Health - is the Link Perceptible?

Is it possible, that laughing out loud, is all that it would require to encounter the absolute mark of total health? Can those funny sounding creatures, laughing their breath out every morning, be definitely confirmed as healthy? While we would like to debate extensively, there are learned professionals, who definitely happen to think so and the leading among them is Dr. Madan Kataria.

Laughter as a medicinal art and thus the possible route to health improvements has probably existed since ages. But it is during the present modern times that the requirement to officially revamp the notion surfaced. It is then that Dr. Madan Kataria, an Indian physician, initiated the drive by starting a laughter club in the year 1995. In fact, he has to his credit, more than 5000 laughter clubs, all across the globe. The official laughter day too was first arranged by Dr. Kataria on January 11, 1998.

How can laughter heal?

Sincere thanks to the gentleman for his efforts, but the question is still unanswered. Can a 20 – 30 minutes laughing session, certainly be the best route to healthy living. If this is all that is required, why haven’t the medicinal setups ceased to exist, since the formal introduction of this healing form?

The answer to this question is perhaps evident in the remarks and studies conducted by reputed establishments. As per the Laughter Yoga International, the official website of laughter yoga movement, laughter is a stress buster which by lifting our spirits promotes positive behaviour and thus well being. It is a calming experience, which fills the inside with oxygen and clears the breathing passage. Likewise, University of Michigan Health System fitness experts are of the opinion that laughter combined with other exercises can enhance the overall working out benefits. Laughter yoga, also popularly known as Hasya Yoga, can enhance the immune system, improve cardiovascular function and maybe even tone muscle.

India is developing fast and each of us, are running at an even faster pace, to make the complete of this opportunity. This desire to break through, in a very subtle way has managed to squeeze out, the fun element from our daily routines. There simply is no time left for personal health initiatives, thus ensuring that schemas like laughter yoga, which always existed, are reintroduced.

However, even this healing therapy seeks time. It mandates hassle free 20 – 30 minutes of laughing coupled with other exercise forms, thus making it a total of about an hour dedicated towards personal fitness. Had the prevailing city culture, bestowed these many precious minutes, for staying healthy, would centres like laughter clubs flourish at all? Imagine yourself going for a walk, to a nearby park for an hour, at least 5 days a week. Would you not feel healthy and rejuvenated and triumphed by the end of the month? Believe me you would and it would not be the magic of laughter, but simply your desire to be healthy.
